World Teacher’s Day

World Teacher’s Day is held annually on 5th October to celebrate all teachers around the globe. It is also known as International Teacher’s Day.

Fujairah has many teachers from many countries working in various schools around the emirate. So this is a time to remember those exceptional educators who supported us as young students and to show gratitude to them for their inspiration. In addition, it is also a day to realise how they have impacted students!

Countries such as India have celebrated World Teacher’s Day on 5th September since 1962. India’s Teacher’s Day marks the birthday of the former vice-president, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. A renowned scholar, philosopher, and the recipient of Bharat Ratna, Dr. Radhakrishnan is independent India’s first vice-president and second president (1962). Born on September 5th, 1888.

In 1962, after he took over as the then President Rajendra Prasad, his students approached him, requesting him to allow them to celebrate his birthday. Instead of allowing them to do so, he asked them to observe it as Teachers’ Day. “Instead of observing my birthday discretely, it would be my pompous privilege if 5th September is observed as Teachers’ Day,” he replied to his students.

It commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/ UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment and teach and learning conditions.

The Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel was adopted in 1997 to complement the 1966 Recommendation by covering teaching personnel in higher education. World Teacher’s Day has been celebrated since 1994.

World Teacher’s Day is co-convened in partnership with the International Labour Organization and UNICEF.
