Minister of Education: School Homework Abolished from Kindergarten to Grade 2
UAE Minister of Education Sarah Al Amiri announced during the Ministry’s media briefing today that school homework will be abolished for students from Kindergarten through Grade 2 as part of the developments for the 2026–2027 academic year.
The decision reflects a move toward reorganising educational practices in the early years, with greater emphasis on learning within the school environment in a way that is appropriate to the children’s age, development, and educational needs.
The initiative aims to reduce the academic burden on students in the foundation years and give them more opportunities to learn through classroom activities and practical learning experiences, without requiring additional academic tasks after the school day. This is intended to promote a healthier balance between learning requirements and children’s needs for growth, interaction, rest, and family and social activities.
The new approach places classroom learning and the quality of teaching practices at the centre of the educational process. It also strengthens the responsibility of schools and teachers to develop students’ fundamental knowledge and skills during the school day, particularly reading, writing, and numeracy.
The focus will be on building a strong educational foundation during the early school years, rather than relying on homework as a compulsory extension of classroom learning.
