Flower of the day: Hammada elegans

Another large bush that is currently in flower is the Hammada Elegans. Large clumps are visible everywhere and, especially when the light is behind the bushes, the subtle white, pink or purple colours of the paper-thin petals are beautiful to see.

Those silvery petals are actually fruit wings, which can be blown about the wind and so carry the seeds. The spiky bushes of Ochradenus baccatus or ‘kurd’ are just starting to show their yellow flowers, while some still carry the clusters of large white berries of last year.

As soon as flowers open, the bush will attract a large number of insects.
