A Medical Achievement Saves the Life of a Child Facing a Very Rare Disease at Al Sharq Hospital – Fujairah

Al Sharq Hospital – Fujairah Branch has witnessed a remarkable medical achievement after the medical team, led by Dr. Tarek Sabry Awad, Consultant of Critical Care Medicine in the Intensive Care Unit, successfully saved the life of a young girl suffering from an extremely rare condition known as Chylomicronemia Syndrome—a disease that affects only one in every million people worldwide.
The child arrived at the hospital in a very critical condition due to acute pancreatitis and an unprecedented increase in blood fat levels, which posed a direct threat to her life. Thanks to the swift intervention, accurate diagnosis, and close cooperation among medical departments, the team performed a complex and life-saving plasma exchange procedure to reduce the fat levels and protect the pancreas and other vital organs.
Dr. Tarek Sabry emphasized that the case presented a great challenge due to the rarity and severity of the condition, noting that this success reflects the rapid advancement of the healthcare sector in Fujairah and the hospital’s ability to handle critical and complex cases with high efficiency.
He added that the medical team went through difficult moments in the ICU, especially since the patient was only 14 years old, but determination, teamwork, and advanced medical capabilities made it possible to save her life and return her to her family in good health.
Dr. Tarek also noted that the hospital is currently documenting this unique medical case to present it at local and regional scientific conferences, aiming to exchange knowledge and raise awareness about managing such rare conditions.
He expressed his gratitude to Al Sharq Hospital management, the intensive care team, and the entire medical and nursing staff, affirming that this success is the result of integrated efforts and a progressive healthcare vision dedicated to saving lives and serving the community.
